*SAS Shorts: Keizer Rapids Park Field Trip Report*
I was joined by 23 other birdwatchers, including an OSU student who is
taking an ornithology class, for our Salem Audubon field trip today. We
walked just under a mile covering the path to the east of the parking lot
near the boat ramp and then into the forested area to the west of the
parking lot. The group was met with a glorious morning with blue skies and
comfortable temperatures. The temperature was 66 degrees at the start and
69 degrees at the end of the field trip. The bird activity was good
overall at Keizer Rapids Park with a total of 27 species identified (seen
and/or heard). After the field trip six of us made an impromptu visit to
Country Glen Park. We observed 19 species there.
The highlights were as follows:
- The highlight of the morning was finding a *Cooper’s Hawk* nest in
the conifer forest. We heard *Cooper’s Hawk* calls as we approached the
area. After finding the nest we saw two juvenile Cooper’s Hawks. Thanks
to Roy for letting us know about the nesting hawks in the area.
- There were five *Great Blue Herons* along the Willamette River;
- We saw two *Osprey* along the river. At one point some crows were
chasing the *Osprey*;
- At Country Glen Park we saw a *Rufous Hummingbird*; and
- We also saw a *Western Tanager* at Country Glen Park.
A complete list of today's birds follows. *Our next SAS field trip* will
be the Minto-Brown Island Park field trip on *Wednesday, August 7th at 7:00
AM*. Meet at Parking Lot #3 at the end of Minto Island Road. The next SAS
Shorts trip is at Minto-Brown Island Park on *Thursday, August 18th at 8:00
