Greetings COBOLers and OBOLites,
I ran the 20th survey on the Madras BBS today under ideal conditions -- calm
winds and Goldilocks temperatures (not too hot, not too cold). No rain,
graupel, sleet, or snow like the previous week's surveys in Harney County.
Paul Sullivan ran this route for 17 years. This was my 3rd year on the route,
which mostly traverses the Crooked River National Grassland in southeastern
Jefferson County. Sagebrush, bitterbrush and juniper dominate--kinda like my
yard.
I observed 45 species (route average 46) and 665 individuals (route average
480). I added one new species to the route list -- Rock Pigeon. Plenty of
suitable habitat for ROPI; rather surprising it escaped detection for 19 years.
Missed on Bullock's Oriole (only the second time not observed) and Red-winged
Blackbird (first miss ever). Matched or set route highs on Great Blue Heron
(3), Northern Harrier (6), Swainson's Hawk (5), Prairie Falcon (2), Rock Pigeon
(20), Euro Dove (25), Mourning Dove (44), Say's Phoebe (4), Western Kingbird
(17), Horned Lark (7), Robin (34), Thrasher (32), Spotted Towhee (20), Lark
Sparrow (8), and Savannah Sparrow (7).
