At around 13:50 I got a call from Alan Contreras. At 13:53 I got a call from Dave Irons. At 13:57 I got a call from Jay Withgott, who'd finally got my number from Steve Warner. There were also voicemails from Jay and from Owen Schmidt. Thank you everybody. I really do appreciate the team work. Jay Withgott found a presumed MAGNIFICENT FRIGATEBIRD at Seaside Cove this afternoon. He and Steve got some very good looks over an extended period. I saw it just as it lifted up on a thermal and drifted south behind Tillamook Head. https://www.flickr.com/photos/mbalame/16272648238/ The bird has an all white head which according my big book of Frigatebirds (Harrison 1983) is the one plumage that is nearly impossible to sort for Magnificent vs Great Frigatebirds. Jay has photos and they will hopefully show details of the white in the breast that will cleanly distinguish which species we're dealing with. Statistically, Magnificent is favored, but the recent bit of weather is coming from the sub-tropical Pacific so we have to go through the drill of eliminating other species. -- Mike Patterson Astoria, OR The Problem With Big Years http://www.surfbirds.com/community-blogs/northcoastdiaries/?p=2550 OBOL archives: www.freelists.org/archive/obol Manage your account or unsubscribe: //www.freelists.org/list/obol Contact moderators: obol-moderators@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
