At one point I thought that one or two birds were cutting while others were retrieving and eating, but I can't swear to that - just my impression. dawn Lincoln City/Nelscott Blogging About the Coast dvillabirds.blogspot.com Sometimes things come when you stop looking ----- Original Message ----- From: Norgren Family Sent: 05/15/13 02:44 PM To: obol@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [obol] Pixieland Crossbills qqqqqqq iiiiiiiii eeeeee I would guess the cones are from Sitka Spruce (bright yellow, 2 1/2- 3" long). I saw Crossbills doing the same thing at South Fogarty Creek SP last August. I was quite surprised. The parking lot was pretty much paved with the cones. I think the Crossbills were cutting them off the branches, then retrieving them from the ground. The cones seem nearly as big as the birds.
