At one point I thought that one or two birds were cutting while others were 
retrieving and eating, but I can't swear to that - just my impression.

qqqqqqq iiiiiiiii eeeeee I would guess the cones are from Sitka Spruce (bright 
yellow, 2 1/2- 3" long). I saw Crossbills doing the same thing at South Fogarty 
Creek SP last August. I was quite surprised. The parking lot was pretty much 
paved with the cones. I think the Crossbills were cutting them off the 
branches, then retrieving them from the ground. The cones seem nearly as big as
