Hi all,
Two days ago, there was a nice flock of Red Crossbills - about 12 or so -
at Alder Creek Farm in Nehalem, OR. I happened to take a picture of an
adult on the right feeding the immature (?) on the left. I was puzzled
about this behavior but now this discussion makes sense of what I saw.
Here is distant picture (low resolution) of the two birds.

Also, I still have at least one, possibly two, Mountain Chickadees at my
feeder in the Manzanita/Nehalem area!
Good birding,
Beverly

On a field trip in early April at the John Scharff festival a few years
Rick Vetter led us to Idlewild Campground up in the woods north of Burns.
There was a good crust of snow on the ground. He showed us fledgling Red
Crossbills still dependent on their parents.

Speaking of Lincoln County Red Crossbills: I was recently at Depoe Bay.
There were three larger-than-SItka-type Red Crossbills in a small shore
pine. One adult male, one female and a sub-adult male. There were also a
number of the small Sitka Red Crossbills in the area. I was near Boiler
Bay,
