First Medford Raptor Run of the 2013-2014 "hawk season" was conducted yesterday (Nov 21) in Jackson County and turned up a surprising bounty of 10 species including Rough-legged Hawks (three) and Red-shouldered Hawks (four). With Cecile Shohet and Ellie Armstrong proving to be sharp-eyed spotters, our three-person group began the approximately 100-mile route at 8:00 a.m., and quickly recorded several Red-tailed Hawks that were the first of 81 of that species seen during the entire count. Last year's November count had only 56 RTHAs. First of the Rough-legged Hawks was seen close to East Antelope Rd. about 200 yards east of the main entrance to Agate Lake. The other two were north of Eagle Point, and were on the same pole briefly. They were seen while looking east from Reese Creek Road. Two RLHAs were seen regularly in the same general area last Fall/Winter. Three of the four Red-shouldered Hawks flew out of the same grove of oak trees along Mountain View Road between Agate Road and Hwy 62 (closer to 62). The fourth was seen from Hwy 62 just north of Mountain View. All appeared to be adult birds. A single Red-shouldered Hawk was seen regularly along Hwy 62 less than a mile south of Mountain View a couple of years ago. A Prairie Falcon was seen on Antioch Road about halfway between Modoc Road and Hwy 234. A single PRFA has been recorded in this general area on two previous Medford Raptor Runs. Three Golden Eagles were spotted. One was soaring over the Ball Road-Reese Creek Road intersection north of Eagle Point. Two were soaring together and seen from Antioch Road south of Hwy 234. Lone Cooper's Hawk was along Larsen Creek and seen from Coal Mine Road. No White-tailed Kites were seen. Jeff Tufts Medford
