Here is my bird list for the first half of July. My wife and I identified 48
species (nothing unusual) on or from the property. I was hopeful that, for the
first time in a long time, my list would not include the European starling but,
alas, a flock flew by today. Until last year, house sparrows were seen
infrequently here, but they have made their presence known this year. We have
started checking the purple martin nests, but I don’t have the latest
information so I will provide an update on this next time. We know there are
young in several of the gourds and eggs still in others. On a separate note,
while in the refuge earlier this week I counted several dozen white pelicans
flying overhead. Also, we are seeing painted turtles somewhat regularly on our
pond and in the Gilbert River.
