Hi all - On Friday, Barbara, Carolyn and I scouted Keizer Rapids Park and Country Glen Park for the upcoming Salem Audubon field trip on Thursday, July 24th at 7:30 a.m. The weather was very pleasant with sunny skies for most of the trip and light winds at times. We identified (saw or heard) 39 species. Most notable sightings: · A pair of Belted Kingfishers on the Willamette River that chased away a Spotted Sandpiper from their area; · An Anna’s Hummingbird at Country Glen Park that gave a brief display; · One Rufous Hummingbird at Country Glen Park that had a rich rufous color to it; · One Hutton’s Vireo and two Warbling Vireos that we heard at Keizer Rapids; · Three Purple Finches; · A female Mallard with five little ones floating down the Willamette River. Soon thereafter the male Mallard flew up the river to join them; · One Common Yellowthroat at Country Glen Park that we got a good look at. We also observed eight American Robins making quite a commotion. It turns out they were harassing a Red-tailed Hawk and finally succeeded in getting it to leave their area. A complete list of today's birds follows. Our next SAS field trip will be at Keizer Rapids Park on Thursday, July 24th at 7:30 a.m. Meet at the boat ramp Join us if you can.
