On 7/10 & 11, 2014, Bill Gray and myself conducted some owl surveys for the Park Service in and around OR Caves Nat. Monument, Josephine Co.
On Thursday night, a distant Barred Owl hooted in response to Bill's spotted owl call. Bill was calling from an open (old) landing adjacent to a road. Just a few minutes later, Bill was hit hard in the head. At first he was disoriented and thought he had stepped into a branch. He then remembered that he was in a totally open place. Next the Barred Owl began vocalizing from about 100 ft. away. The hit drew blood.
Next morning, July 10, I located a pair of Northern Spotted owl with 2 young. The young were downy but had (some) primaries and tail feathers and could fly passably well. Undisclosed location & quite remote. Nice to know there are Spotted Owl raising younsters despite conflict with the Barred Owls.
