Took about 30 years of looking at birds in Josephine County, but a really great County find turned up today (04-29-14) in the Whitehorse Park area...a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE. Part of that being in the right place at the right time. Bird was in the sandy flat above the boat ramp and parking area. The habitat was a pretty good simulation of the sage country this bird favors. Not much growing there, small patches of grass, forbs and a few scattered scrubby sandbar willow (the gray-leaved willow), some open patches. Saw the bird well for a few minutes. It would fly around and land at the top, dead portions of the scrubby willows. After a bit it flew off to who knows where. Think I will have to write a detailed description for e-bird on this one. It getting more difficult to come up with first-time County species there days. Seems common place in comparison, but there were two YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS present too. Dennis (north of Grants Pass)
