Bald eagle nest at north end had two healthy chicks in it up until around 7/20.
Observations since then most often show an empty nest, sometimes one juvenile
perched near it, and one juvenile and one adult were seen yesterday soaring
together over the east side of the preserve.
One osprey chick fledged this weekend. One is still in the nest as of this
morning. A total of six osprey were observed at one time yesterday (two in
nest, four in flight high up) so it seems like other nearby nests have fledged
some birds perhaps?
Greater and lesser yellowlegs (3 to 4 of each), dowitcher (9), least sandpipers
(2+), spotted sandpiper, killdeer all observed in pintail pond. The east and
south sides are developing mudflat habitat.
Lazuli buntings still singing in several places around the preserve.
Large concentrations of cliff swallows have been observed over the last week -
many juveniles and adults foraging over Wapato marsh and perching in the bare
branches of the willows at intersection K on our new map. Multiple hundreds of
birds including the barn swallows, tree swallows and Vaux's swifts also
foraging.
Many of the tree swallow nest boxes are still active with nestlings and many
fledglings are also out and about.
The herony is empty and lots of juvenile great blues seen on the Preserve.
Over 20 great egrets are sharing the presumably good hunting in pintail pond
with them.
The north entrance trail head is open and all trails are walkable. The scent
of tarweed permeates the air.
Join us for a Thursday Evening Ramble this week and the two weeks following -
meet at the education building at 7pm.
