Hello all,

Some relatively recent Illinois Valley Josephine Co. bird sightings:

On the morning of 6/26/15, Christie and I drove up Happy Camp Road to the spur that leads to Bolan & Tannin Lakes (Forest Road 4812). At the snag patch (a small fire ~ 6 years ago - at the junction of 4812 & spur 016) we found several White-Headed Woodpecker including an adult feeding a fledgling, a flock of Gray Jay, numerous Green-Tailed Towhee, a Chipping Sparrow and other expected species. Lots of House Wren activity. Continuing along the road 4812 onto spur 041 (road to Tannen Lake) at the Talus/ Boulder field on the south side of Althouse Mountain, we detected Rock Wren and Dusky Flycatcher, & other expected species. This is a reliable Josephine Co. site for Rock Wren and breeding is suspected. The wet meadow below the road and adjacent forest had Hermit, McGillvary's, Nashville & Yellow-Rumped Warblers & other expected species. This general area (Bolan/ Tannin spurs) is about 5000 ft. elevation.

On the afternoon of 6/21/14, we checked out the Bald Eagle nest near Martin Road (off Rockydale Road). The young bald eagle was on the nest and active. It was eating from a rather large piece of food. The eaglet is getting big and could fledge soon. An adult bald eagle was perched in a hardwood snag upstream perhaps 1/3 mile away.

On the evening of 6/18/15, we birded Waldo Lookout (aka Sanger Peak) Road (Forest Service Road 4803) which heads south from Waldo Road. A single Poorwill was sighted on the road about 3 miles up. Common Nighthawk were heard near Waldo Hill. This road is the most reliable Josephine County site I know for Poorwill.

At our place (Takilma area, just off the valley floor), we have located Red-Shouldered Hawk and Pileated Woodpecker nests this season. The young hawks (not sure how many) have fledged. Not sure the success of the woodpecker nest but they are gone. A pair of Barred Owls have been very vocal lately, even in the day. I have heard the young give vocalizations (not sure how many? At least one.) but not seen them. Last year, there were 2 young Barred Owls with parents in the same area.

cheers, Romain
