I birded Heceta Beach this morning from 7:00-9:00 finding and estimated 4,500 shorebirds to the north and south of Driftwood Shores including: 1 Snowy Plover 400 Semipalmated Plover 1 LONG-BILLED CURLEW 4 Whimbrel 6 Marbled Godwit 3 Red Knot 500 Sanderling 1 Semipalmated Sandpiper 3500 Western Sandpiper 500 Least Sandpiper 2 Baird's Sandpiper 1 Short-billed Dowitcher 2 Red-necked Phalarope At the north jetty Florence I found: 1 Wandering Tattler 1 Greater Yellowlegs 1 WILLET 10 Whimbrel 5 Marbled Godwit 1 Black Turnstone 15 Surfbird And the Dog Pond I found 1 Pectoral Sandpiper, 1 Short-billed Dowitcher and 1 Greater Yellowlegs. I found very few shorebirds at Coos Bay, no Elegant Terns, but was surprised to find an American Bittern at the north spit. A wet, windy, warm day at the coast. Roger Robb Springfield, OR
