We had a crisp male SLATE-COLORED JUNCO in our yard today with the regular large flock of juncos. This is a FOS and the most striking Slate-colored we've hosted, with not even a hint of brown or black to suggest interbreeding. It was a very birdy day in the yard in general, with a large flock of about 50 CEDAR WAXWINGS foraging on berries all morning, at least 6 TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS flocking with Ruby-crowned and Golden-crowned Kinglets in the trees, and a good assortment of sparrows. The pair of White-throated Sparrows we hosted earlier in the month appear to have moved on. Good birding, Thomas Meinzen Eugene
