Last Winter we put up a thistle feeder and have enjoyed visits first from
Pine Siskins and now lots of Goldfinches. Mostly they are Lesser
Goldfinches with a green back, but quite a few Americans too. Yesterday
afternoon I saw a very dark one out there, so pale underneath that the
first impression was of a black and white goldfinch. My Peterson bird guide
describes a black-backed subspecies common in the Rockies. Do we often get
the Black-backed Lessers here?
