My experience with Purple Finch at Thornton Creek. Lincoln County is similar to what most people have reported, with a few exceptions. It is a common breeding species here which regularly shows up in mid-March and leaves around mid- September, But it does occasionally (that is, like once every three of four years) put in an appearance in winter.

I have a similar pattern of Purple Finch presence this fall and winter at a higher elevation about air 6 miles away from Paul and Carol's yard. They appear frequently throughout the year and appear to nest on the property. A golden Purple Finch has not been here yet in 2013. House Finches have dwindled almost to nothing.Pamela Johnston-----Original Message----- From: Paul T. Some of the gaps in the list below are due to the fact that wewere not home, or spent little time watching the backyard on a particular day. Here are the dates we recorded Purple Finches this winter: 2 October 25 October 24 November 7 December 11 December 12 December 21 December 29 December 1 January 3 January 4 January 5 January 11 January 19 January 20 January 21 January 27 January 28 January 29 January 30 January 31 January 5 February 6 February 7 February 11 February 12 February 16 February 18 February golden 19 February 21 February 22 February 23 February 24 February golden 25 February golden 5 March 6 March golden 7 March 8 March 8 March 10 March In the last few weeks a male Purple Finch with orange-ish plumage has appeared. This is apparently due to a dietary deficiency. In fact, the normally purple parts are a rich GOLD color. It is a striking bird (dates noted above). Good birding, everyone, Paul Sullivan & Carol Karlen McMinnville OBOL archives: www.freelists.org/archive/obol Manage your account or unsubscribe: //www.freelists.org/list/obol Contact moderators: obol-moderators@xxxxxxxxxxxxx OBOL archives: www.freelists.org/archive/obol Manage your account or unsubscribe: //www.freelists.org/list/obol Contact moderators: obol-moderators@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
