Earlier this season I collected some pellets from underneath a spotted owl nest. As expected, there were a lot of rodents, but one pellet I found had an unexpected surprise! One of the owls had depredated a bird! I could see feathers, and the remains of a bird foot. I know that spotted owls will occasionally take a bird, but I had never found an example before. So, my challenge is, can anyone ID the bird species from the pellet?! One will have to have some good knowledge of feather ID. A great book I use as reference is 'Bird Feathers: A Guide to North American Species', by S.David Scott. I haven't tried to suss out the species of the unfortunate bird yet, but I thought it might be a fun challenge to the OBOLers out there. I'm not sure if anyone will be able to come up with a positive ID, but, fun nonetheless. https://plus.google.com/u/1/photos/112491104317230198761/albums/6059723537305914481 -- Cheers, Zia Fukuda
