[oagitm] IMPORTANT UPDATE - Advanced Notification Update for SDC Change Management - RFC 2485 Split Enterprise DNS

  • From: "SDC Change Management * OR SDC" <sdc.changemanagement@xxxxxxxxxxx>
  • To: undisclosed-recipients:;
  • Date: Mon, 12 Dec 2011 13:03:47 -0800

There is new information, including a new implementation date. Please
read the entire email carefully as you may have action required.

The upcoming State of Oregon Enterprise internal/external DNS split
consists of a number of related, although very different functions. If
your configuration fits one of the following scenarios, implement the
related changes and contact the SDC for testing or clarification.

1. The current name servers PANTHER, MANX and LYNX will provide
resolution and recursion for internal State of Oregon customers and
partners only. No action required.

2. a. The current name servers PANTHER, MANX and LYNX will no longer be
authoritative for State of Oregon Internet domains.

    b. The following hosts will become authoritative-only name servers
[i.e. not provide recursion] for State of Oregon Internet registered
domains:

            PUMA.state.or.us 192.149.16.99

            LION.state.or.us 192.149.16.131

  These new external-only, authoritative-only name servers (Puma/Lion)
will need to replace PANTHER, MANX and LYNX in domain registrations
hosted, but not directly managed, by the State Data Center [e.g.
nwrapid.com].

3. Recursion will be provided to SDC external customers that use state
DNS by utilizing the following new caching name servers:

  ORPDX-DNS.state.or.us 192.149.16.98

  ORSLM-DNS.state.or.us 192.149.16.130

  OREUG-DNS.state.or.us 192.149.16.114

These new name servers will need to replace PANTHER, MANX and LYNX as
forwarders in external customer/partner DNS configurations. Customer
name servers will need to be allowed access to the State of Oregon DNS
cache before the configuration change is made on the customer DNS. This
new configuration should be tested in close coordination with SDC
Network prior to implementing the change.

01/05/2012 Fourth Reminder
02/09/2012 Final Reminder at CAB prior to change

On Sunday, February 12, 2012 between 4:00am - 5:00am, the following
State of Oregon Enterprise DNS servers will be removed from public
domain name and address block registrations to provide internal State of
Oregon name and address resolution only:

159.121.107.80 panther.state.or.us
159.121.31.50 manx.state.or.us
159.121.107.82 lynx.state.or.us

Internal (i.e. inside the enterprise State of Oregon firewall) DNS
forwarding, domain delegation, public domain name and address blocks
managed by the SDC will be unaffected by this change.

SDC customers external to the State of Oregon (i.e. outside the
enterprise State of Oregon firewall) may need to modify DNS forwarding,
domain delegation, public domain name and address block configuration.

CAUTION: Customer public domain and block registrations hosted, but not
directly managed, by the SDC may be adversely impacted by this change!

IMPORTANT: Customer public domain and block resolution continuity can be
maintained by either:
A) transferring domain and block management to the SDC [recommended;
domain ownership remains with the customer]; or
B) updating the registration with current State of Oregon Enterprise DNS
information.

arrangements to transfer or update customer DNS configuration, domain
registration or delegation.

Thank You!
