Smith, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Howard University, has been appointed chair of the Department, effective July 1. A graduate of Matoaca High School, she is continuing the academic legacy of her parents, Emma B. Smith, Ph.D., and the late James W. Smith, Ph.D., who served as chairperson of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science and the Department of History and International Studies, respectively, at Virginia State Uuniversity. Dr. Smith joined the Howard University faculty in 1995, after having become the first African-American female to earn a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Virginia. She is also the first female to receive tenure and earn the rank of full professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and is the only full-time female faculty member in the department. Dr. Smith has established an interdisciplinary theoretical and computational fluid dynamics research program. She has received research grants from NASA, DOD, and the Boeing Corporation to conduct research on topics in Atmospheric Turbulence, Aeroacoustics, Vortex-Wake Aircraft Encounters, Simulation of Wake Vortex Dynamics, and Rotorcraft Icing Severity and Detection and has authored several articles on these topics. Dr. Smith also conducts research in computational neuroscience in collaboration with the Laboratory for Auditory Mechanics at the National Institute on Deafness and other Communication Disorders (NIDCD). Dr. Smith is actively involved in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the College of Engineering, Architecture, and Computer Sciences (CEACS), and the Howard University Faculty Senate. She serves as Vice Chair of the Faculty Senate, Director of the Computer Learning and Design Center, and faculty advisor for the Howard chapter of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). Her personal goal is to be a mentor and resource to all students but especially to those underrepresented in engineering. Dr. Smith has traveled extensively both national and internationally, including to Paris, France and Barcelona, Spain, presenting results of her research in engineering and computational neuroscience. She recently returned from Singapore - a seven day trip to the International Conference of Women in Engineering. - This information was provided by Emma B.
