The Patriots summer camp "Road Map for Techies" is off and running as Ms.
Tamara Dickerson, the camp coordinator said to the CTV television reports. The
first week was educational and adventurous. Several of the students and parents
attended a fund raiser with Nichelle Nichols, best know as Lt. Uhura of the
televison show Star Trek. She was the guest speaker and spokesperson who
introduced the Traveling Space Museum that has a new office in Prince George's
County

Students had an opportunity to hear Ms. Nichols' story on being interviewed
for the role on Star Trek and how she enjoyed playing in many episodes. Some of
the students were participants of the Patriots Solar Systems Competition and
asked her about careers in space science.

Thirty two "Techie Campus" got acquainted with one another
by sharing their career goals in science, technology, engineering and math.
All of the students created their own resumes as they envisioned their ultimate
career. Mr. Jarrett Cade, a Howard University, Mechanical Engineer graduate
and Mr. Cravius Nicholson, President of AYOA

hosted the Flight Simulation Competition among the students. The students were
divide into groups to do a report on aerospace careers: Electrical Engineering,
Space Careers, Aerospace, Air Traffic Controller, Career Pilots and Helicopter.
Mr. Cade and Mr. Nicholson showed our campers how to fly airplanes using the
Microsoft Flight Simulation Deluxe Editions.

Toby Ratcliffe from the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, in
Bethesda, MD arranged for our students to witness the Eleventh International
Submarine Race. The students to witness the Eleventh International Submarine
Race. The students met with three high school teams from Forida, New Jersey
and Frederick Maryland and learned how submarines are made and operated. Teams
were composed of mostly college students from all over the United States as far
west as the University of San Diego and south as the Florida Atlantic
University; as well as teams from the University of Beth, United Kingdom and
the Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal from Montreal. The submarine race had the
students buzzing about designing their very own submarine.

Later that afternoon, the campers traveled to Washington, DC to visit the Air
and Space Museum. They saw many hands-on exhibits and learned about
aeronautics. What a way to end the first week!
