Higgins and Rice University to Host Men of Color Leadership Symposium HOUSTON, TX (August 27, 2014): Rice University will host a day-long Men of Color Leadership Symposium (“Men of Color”) on October 3, 2014 dedicated to helping male students of color succeed in school and career through mentorship. Seventeen men of color, or 3.4 percent, are chief executive officers of Fortune 500 companies Men of color make up only 13.7 percent of our nation’s physicians. Only 2 percent of the top leadership at America’s 100 largest law firms are men of color and none of the presidents of America’s leading universities are men of color. Even in the executive branch of our federal government, men of color hold only 10.7 percent of the senior management positions. “How can these statistics improve when an alarmingly large percentage of male students of color don’t finish high school, asks Pauline Higgins, attorney –at—law and Founder of Men of Color. “19 percent of Hispanic boys, 12.3 percent of American Indian and Alaskan Native boys, and 10.6 percent of African American boys drop out of high school each year, compared to 6.3 percent of White boys and 3.3 percent of Asian/Pacific Islander boys. Together, we can be the change that we want and need to see for men of color regarding education in school, in college, at work, and in leadership roles -- it is all about an educated and prepared men of color pipeline and we hope Houstonians will join us and mentor these fine young men.” The symposium will include informative and engaging presenters and keynote speakers who will share their own paths of success including: David D. Medina, Rice University and Director of Multicultural Community Relations; Dr. Tyrone Howard, UCLA Professor and Author: newly released book, "Why Race and Culture Matter in Schools: Closing the Achievement Gap in America's Classrooms," Founder, UCLA’s Black Male Institute; Dr. Richard A. Tapia, distinguished mathematician and University Professor, Rice University; historical perspectives from Professors Edward Cox and Alex Byrd, Rice University; Dr. Dawn Hanson will focus on the brain and early childhood development; Tony Castilleja, Engineering, Boeing; Dr. George Hanson; Nathaniel J. Higgins, Attorney-Advisor, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission; A. Martin Wickliff – Partner, Cozen O’Connor; Dr. Mark Adickes (www.jocktodoc.com<http://www.jocktodoc.com>); Elliott Coffey; Anthony Chase, Chairman & CEO, Chase Source LP; and Federal District Judge Vanessa D. Gilmore.
