"OPENING ReMARCs" (tm)

A weekly newsletter from Marc H. Morial, President and CEO of the National
Urban League

From the President's Desk:
PRESIDENT OBAMA MAKING DIVERSITY AMONG JUDICIARY A TOP PRIORITY
[http://org2.democracyinaction.org/o/5666/images/or%209-20%20MHMObama.jpg]
America's judiciary is looking more and more like America, thanks to President
Obama. For the first time in history, federal judicial appointments have not
been mostly white males. More than 70 percent of Obama's confirmed judicial
nominees during his first two years have been women or people of color. In
contract, just over 48 percent of Bill Clinton's appointees just under 33
percent of George W. Bush's were not white males. President Obama appointed
the first Latina Supreme Court Justice, Sonia Sotomayor, and brought the
number of women on the court to three for the first time with the appointment
of Elena Kagan. He also appointed the first openly gay federal judge, J. Paul
Oetken. Because the United States is a diverse culture, it's imperative that
every branch of government reflect that diversity. I applaud President Obama
for his leadership, and take heart in a society that becomes more inclusive
with each passing year.

National Urban League Helping Mortgage Scam Victims
[http://org2.democracyinaction.org/o/5666/images/or%209-20%20Foreclosure.jpg]
Doris Tinson is just one of a growing number of American homeowners, desperate
to save their homes from foreclosure, who are being duped by mortgage loan scam
artists. Doris was falling behind on her refinanced high mortgage payments and
was looking for help. On the way home from church she saw a sign in the median
promising loan modification for a fee. But after forking over $2000 of her
hard earned money, after months of waiting for action, and finally receiving a
notice that her house was being sold, it became clear that Doris was the victim
of a scam. As the mortgage crisis sweeps the nation, it is unfortunately
being accompanied by a rise in mortgage fraud. But you don't have to be a
victim. The National Urban League's network of U.S. Department of Housing and
Urban Development (HUD) approved housing counselors has been offering free
mortgage counseling services for years.

URBAN LEAGUE EMPOWERMENT SUMMIT HELPS HUNDREDS OF JOB-SEEKERS AND HOMEOWNERS
[http://org2.democracyinaction.org/o/5666/images/or%209-20%20RevLarry.jpg]
Marc Morial speaks with the Rev. Larry McCollough, who saved his home from
foreclosure with the help of the Urban League of Greater Atlanta

Hundreds of job-seekers and homeowners facing foreclosure found hope at the
Urban League Empowerment Summit in Atlanta this past weekend. A team of experts
providing comprehensive job and home rescue resources joined the National Urban
League and the Urban League of Greater Atlanta at the Georgia World Congress
Center. In partnership with the For Sisters Only expo, the Urban League
Empowerment Summit offered a free one-stop home rescue and career fair to help
those hardest hit by economic crisis in Atlanta. The weekend kicked off with a
reception honoring Atlanta's Women of Power (view the video
slideshow<http://org2.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=xxes4DuPtq7zfglflkueAaaudXmoh0NN>).
Other highlights included empowerment workshops, health screenings, and a
unique "Lash Out Against Equality" beauty booth. Congratulations to the Urban
League of Greater Atlanta for a great event, and thanks to all the counselors
and staff members who make it possible.

On September 13, 2006, the U.S. Census Bureau released data on income, poverty
and health insurance coverage for 2010. The recession officially ended in June
2009 and so this is the first time that data from a full year of the recovery
is available. NULPI analyzed the 2010 data and data from the last decade -
NULPI's separate reports on income, poverty and health insurance coverage can
