Our areas of expertise include (but are not limited to) anthropology, child development, demography, economics, education, history, law, gerontology, linguistics, political science, psychology, sociology, and statistics. The Board on Behavioral, Cognitive, and Sensory Sciences was created to offer the best analysis and judgment of the scientific community to inform decisions on pressing policy issues, and to assist in setting research agendas that are emerging in these scientific fields. The objective is to anticipate the policy issues likely to arise as a result of new developments in these sciences. The Board on Human-Systems Integration provides new perspectives on theoretical and methodological issues concerning the relationship of individuals and organizations to technology and the environment, identifies critical issues in the design, test, evaluation, and use of new human-centered technologies, and advises sponsors on the research needed to expand the scientific and technical bases for designing technology to support the needs of its users. The Board also provides a formal and regular forum for sponsors to talk with each other and with a knowledgeable body of experts. This position works closely with the Board Director to provide leadership and direction for the Board on Behavioral, Cognitive and Sensory Sciences and Board on Human-Systems Integration. The incumbent will oversee all projects under the board and manage the finances for multiple projects and board contracts. The person in this position will train and supervise all program officers and offer creative solutions to issues that arise in order to maintain time schedules and contract requirements. Oversees the report review process for board projects and the eventual publication of reports, and designs dissemination plans for maximal impact. Plans staff development meetings and oversees development of staff training and reference resources. Designs job descriptions and conducts searches to hire new staff, completes performance reviews, and performs other supervisory duties. Assists in program development by developing project parameters and work plans, participates in sponsor meetings and ensures contract deliverables are met. Attends and assists on board meeting development and board-related projects. Fills in for the Board Director as needed. BASIC REQUIREMENTS: Ph.D in a related field or equivalent knowledge with 10 years of related professional experience, 5 of which were in a supervisory capacity. Demonstrated impact on the advancement of science or policy through the successful completion of National Academies activities or equivalent outside projects and through effective dissemination of these activities. Ability to solve intellectual problems that reflect substantial variety and complexity. Ability to serve as a resource to others in the resolution of complex problems and issues. Ability to operate with substantial latitude for independent judgment and action. Ability to negotiate funding. Ability to train and develop staff. Ability to work successfully in a team environment and to form and maintain effective teams. Experience working in complex environments with a high degree of organizational effectiveness. Ability to develop relationships with co-workers and employees in other National Academies departments through effective communication. Excellent written and oral skills with a proven ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees. Understanding of the National Academies' mission and culture.
