hi,
welcome to the first newsletter for the club of odd pursuits.
one of the most interesting new pursuits to join the club is that of "great
white feeder". no, indeed, it is not (as i originally imagined)
one who haunts retirement homes frequented by ex-nats of the apartheid era
and throwing them occasional titbits. it is a new hobby created by a few
aspirant buffs of the surf-ski fraternity.
this involves paddling out to sea and then offering the kayak as a tasty
morsel to the hungry white shark population. so far three crazy
members have joined.
"expensive! of course," says one of the (carefully anonymous) members. "but
it's wonderful seeing the expression on their faces."
guidelines so far for this tricky pursuit are: only surf-skis (full kayaks
don't seem to be as popular with sharks); ensure that the kayak
is painted white throughout and that the tips (each end) are painted in a
high-contrast apposing colour (this attracts the sharks attention
as they think it is a seal bobbing up and down); have a friend nearby to
fish you out of the water afterwards.
insurance companies have not rushed to support the new hobby but it is only
a matter of time.
"it's a real wake up sport!"
speaking of awake, it seems that capetonians aren't. winter has lashed we
with a peculiar fury over the past few weeks. many would be forgiven for
pondering life in sunny, balmy london.
