Bird Walk November 14 at Rappahannock Westminster Canterbury
On Monday, November 14 at, the Northern Neck Audubon Society will conduct a
bird and big tree walk at Rappahannock Westminster Canterbury, 132 Lancaster
Drive, Irvington, 22480. Meet at the main parking lot in front of the RWC
building at 9:00 a.m.
Jeff Wright and Frank Schaff will lead the bird walk along the many nature
trails in the woods where we will enjoy the extensive palette of fall leaf
colors, along the pond and including the Beaver Dam Trail. We may be rewarded
with views of hawks, kingfishers, wild turkeys and warblers still migrating
through Virginia. Tom Teeples, a resident of RWC, will lead us to see three
trees that are about 200 years old, a Southern Red Oak Mockernut Hickory and
Willow Oak. He will also point out the location of the Shadblow/Serviceberry
that is ranked # 2 in size in VA.
Over 200 species of birds have been reported in Lancaster County. This year's
count is already at 125 species and we may be able to add to that count. All
the birding data collected will be entered into the e-Bird system to support
national and state level programs. Data collected helps VA DGIF and other
state agencies map the distribution and status of Virginia's bird community in
order to better inform our natural resource and conservation decisions.
Please call Frank Schaff at 804-462-0084 to let him know you are coming in case
the walk is cancelled. Please visit northernneckaudubon.org for upcoming walks
and events.
