SATURDAY BIRD WALK AT VIR-MAR BEACH MARCH 23 On Saturday, March 23, the Northern Neck Audubon Society (NNAS) will conduct a bird walk at Vir-Mar Beach in Northumberland County. This small beach offers an excellent vista at the confluence of the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay. Possible sightings are Brown Pelicans, Common Golden Eyes, Red Throated and Common Loons, Surf and Black Scoters, Forster’s Terns, Gannets, Buffleheads and Long Tailed Ducks (formerly called Old Squaws). Meet at Vir-Mar Beach at 8:00 a.m. Vir-Mar Beach is about 10 minutes from Burgess. From the intersection of Route 200 and Route 360 in Burgess. take Rt. 360 west about 1/8th mile. Turn right on Rt. 644 (Hacks Neck Road). Follow 644 for 3.6 miles and turn left onto Route 643 (Vir-Mar Beach Road). Continue 0.7 miles to the end at Vir-Mar Beach. If time allows, the group will continue on to Dameron Marsh or Hughlett Point. There will be several pairs of loaner binoculars available.
