Prescribed Fire Community,
This is a quick reminder and correction for the EPA EER Revision Action Alert
the Coalition of Prescribed Fire Councils issued last month. The deadline for
comments is this Wednesday, February 3rd. In the previous Alert, I
inadvertently listed the incorrect Docket ID Number. I have corrected that
number in the attached and listed it here:
EPA-HQ-OAR-2013-0572
We have heard from several Councils and seen drafts of comments. As with many
Rx fire issues, the responses of the fire community are diverse- some councils
have supported, others have picked at a few issues, and a few have spoken
strongly on the need to ramp up Rx fire and how the EPA's proposal falls short.
As I mentioned in my last email, the Coalition feels that your engagement in
the process is most important- as we have all stated, if we are engaged with
EPA and local regulators, we will have a seat at the table and be participants
in the future of Rx fire.
Thanks again for your efforts,
Morgan

Prescribed Fire Community,
The Coalition of Prescribed Fire Councils serves many roles for the
prescribed fire community. An increasing part of our mission is to address
issues of national concern- our Governing Board has been engaged in one of
these and have released the attached "Action Alert" regarding EPA Exceptional
Event Rule revisions. We have attached a 2-page "Action Alert" that summarizes
the large text of this revision, focused on the implications for the prescribed
fire community. As with many natural resource issues, this is a complicated
one. We applaud EPA for its recognition of the prescribed fire community and
the seriousness of the "fuels problem" - some in our community are pushing for
more supportive language and others are happy with the proposed text.
Regardless of your PFC's views, we feel it is important to have our voices
heard on this issue and maintain our community's engagement with air quality at
a national level. As with your overwhelming engagement with the 2015 EPA Ozone
letter, I encourage each of you to familiarize your Councils with the attached
document and to use "local stories" in any comment - remind EPA of the many
important roles that prescribed fire plays in your region for fire hazard
reduction, biodiversity conservation, maintenance of cultural practices, as
part of timber, game, and grazing land management, etc- each of these reminds
EPA and others of how diverse our community is and how critical prescribed fire
is to these important outcomes.
As a supplement to our Action Alert, please take a look at the National
Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) map:
Caution-https://www.frames.gov/partner-sites/emissions-and-smoke/smoke-mgt-resources/ozone/
<
Caution-https://www.frames.gov/partner-sites/emissions-and-smoke/smoke-mgt-resources/ozone/
- these areas are the most at risk for challenges to future prescribedburning.
