Resilient Landscapes - Fire-Adapted Communities - Safe and Effective Wildfire
Response
The Northeast Regional Strategy Committee (NE RSC) provides executive
leadership, coordination, and guidance to carry out the Northeast Regional
Action Plan while providing a forum for members to guide strategic direction
for fire and land management activities. The NE RSC continues to
collaboratively recognize, support, and help with National Cohesive Wildland
Fire Management Strategy goals and implementation efforts.

Scanning the Future of Wildfire: Resilience Ahead...One Way or Another
[Front cover of the report Scanning the Future of Wildfire Resilience Ahead
Whether We Like It or Not.]A recent research project supported by the Joint
Fire Science Program brought together futures researchers and wildfire
specialists to envision what the future holds for wildfire impacts and how the
wildfire community may respond to the complex suite of emerging challenges.
The consensus of the project's foresight panel suggests that an era of
resilience is ahead, but that this resilience may come with one of the
following:
* A very high cost (after some kind of collapse)
* A more systematic path (if the wildfire community plans for, and fosters,
resilience)
* Something in between
In any projected future scenario, the panel suggests that the end of the fire
suppression paradigm is imminent and that a new paradigm -- one that fosters
natural resilience of the system, along with natural wildfire -- is arising.

New Report Provides Insight to Community Success in Reducing Wildfire Risk
[Cover of Land Use Planning to Reduce Wildfire Risk Lessons from Five Western
Cities.]This report documents how wildfires are increasingly an urban problem
that affects not just homes but also water and power supplies, transportation
networks, and cultural resources, resulting in injuries, lost lives, and
millions of dollars in damages. While focused on five western U.S. cities,
there are valuable lessons in this report for communities all across the
country. See the full Land Use Planning to Reduce Wildfire Risk

Webinar - LANDFIRE: The Biophysical Settings and Historic Fire Regimes of the
North Atlantic
Presenter: Randy Swaty, The Nature Conservancy - LANDFIRE team
When: March 16, 2016 12:00 pm ET
LANDFIRE is a multipartner program that characterizes vegetation, fire, and
fuel characteristics for the United States. Many of the datasets build upon one
another, making them easy to work with and adapt for local use. In this
Webinar, Randy Swaty of The Nature Conservancy's LANDFIRE team will explore the
presettlement vegetation and fire regimes of the Northeastern U.S. as modeled
and mapped by LANDFIRE. This work is enabled by the Biophysical Settings models
and descriptions, which Randy will describe. There will also be a "call to
action" because LANDFIRE is planning to update and improve these bundles over
the next year.
For conference details go to the LANDFIRE
