IM creates 'rampant security risk'

Instant Messaging (IM) applications such AOL and ICQ are incredibly
popular, with IDC forecasting that there will be 255 million users
worldwide by the end of 2006. However, in a corporate setting, IM poses a
"rampant security risk" on computer networks. Gartner analysts have
declared 2003 the year when IM will take off and have warned IT managers
that if they don't embrace the technology, their staff will do so often
outside of the IT department's reach. Although the major IM vendors are
preparing corporate versions of their software, current IM versions are
problematic because they used to send files which firewalls don't pick up
because they do not pass through corporate e-mail systems; they are not
checked for viruses; and they are not logged.
