Homeland Security official defends student tracking system

The Student Exchange and Visitor Information System (SEVIS) is working
well, despite some glitches, Homeland Security official Johnny Williams
told the House Judiciary Immigration, Border Security and Claims
Subcommittee. SEVIS is a system to track foreign students studying in the
United States. The system had only been tested, but after the September 11
attacks, Congress required immigration officials to develop a system to
track foreign students by January 1. 4,300 schools are currently connected
to the system, and complete data should be online by August 1. The system
still has problems integrating with some schools, and funding has yet to be
allocated to combat immigration fraud.
