Audible Magic, of Los Gatos, California, is developing software to
"fingerprint" files traded over peer-to-peer networks. The Audible Magic
software would reside in a router or other network gateway, and do a bit
by bit comparison of passing packets. If the fingerprint of a file matches
the fingerprint of a copyrighted work, Audible Magic would block the
transmission. "We believe that what this does is transform network devices
to be content-intelligent," said CEO Vance Ikezoye. "That will be
important. You can't just say, 'Let's block peer-to-peer.'" The Audible
Magic project is still in its testing phase, and will be marketed to
universities and corporations, as a measure to conserve bandwidth.
Universities have had more problems with file-sharers, as hosts of
high-speed networks and student populations. The software would require
large lists of file-fingerprints of copyrighted works that content
providers wish to protect, and much computing power to run.
