Language evolves and changes with children, and gesture
is an integral part of language. Some researchers have speculated
that language evolved first in the form of a system of gestures, with
sound taking over only later as the preferred channel of communication.

Upbeat Story: teen girl engineers a school
http://tinyurl.com/3d7rm8
A teenager (in one of the worst schools in the city) succeeds in
pushing the Boston school system to open an Engineering high school.
In eighth grade in Jamaica, Alafia Spencer designed a catapult that
propelled golf balls across her physics classroom, dissected a
chicken, and analyzed the bones of a decomposing lizard.
Two years later, as a 10th-grader at Boston's Hyde Park High School,
she sat through biology and geometry lectures about subjects she had
long ago mastered. Bored, the aspiring aerospace engineer worried
that the school wasn't challenging enough for her or her classmates.
