Lawyers set precedent, join Teamsters union:
Parker Stanbury's attorneys unanimous

After months of locking horns with management over complaints about
inadequate working conditions and low pay, the lawyers in Parker
Stanbury's Phoenix law office have unionized.

The organizing effort is believed to be the first of its kind by private
lawyers in Arizona.

In a unanimous vote March 14, the lawyers became members of the Teamsters,
a union formed for truckers in the early 1900s, which has 1.4 million
members in a number of industries .

Two of the 18 eligible attorneys abstained from voting.

Though joining the Teamsters is intended to improve working conditions for
the office's 20 lawyers through the negotiating muscle the organization
brings to collective bargaining, it could have the opposite effect.
Parker's management has threatened to lock out and permanently replace all
the unionized lawyers depending on the outcome of negotiations.

A lack of job security, hourly performance quotas, few legal research
materials and no law library are among the many concerns that led the
lawyers to organize, said Monte Rich, a lawyer in the Phoenix office.

Though pleased with the benefit their service provides, the lawyers said
the set-up at Parker, working in cubicles without even the Internet or
other legal research tools, makes them more like telemarketers than
lawyers, lowers the quality of the service and potentially compromises
attorney-client confidentiality.
