a red hearing.- the focus must be on language and dialect
speakers not cultural ignorance and the forces who dominate
that conversation.
Politicians, linguists, educators, students' parents and
the student population itself MUST support the learning
process or we will continue along the 50 year dismal

There's a great book written by Herbert Foster back in 1974 called "Ribbin',
Jivin', and Playin' the Dozens." Foster believes standard English should be
taught very seriously and that any lowering of standards for minority
students is racist. The days of "all you need is a well-planned lesson" are
gone, although the prospects for many middle class teachers, both black and
white, of taking the plunge into a world of rough language, sexual
implication and the constant testing of teachers can be threatening enough.
At a time when concern is developing about educating children at risk,
"Ribbin'" is must reading for teachers and parents whose goal is to equip all
kids with the skills needed for survival in this society.
