************************************************************** Net Happenings - From Educational CyberPlayGround ************************************************************** From: "David P. Dillard" <jwne@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wed, 19 Feb 2003 04:36:48 -0500 (EST) I received in my email a reference question from a member of a biomechanics discussion group seeking "sense of ground" "balance" and "proprioception" information sources regarding diabetics from other list members. I am not sharing my response to this request out of a deep realization that you are all going to rush out and clog libraries in your area looking up information on this topic that you have been eagerly awaiting for some time now. Rather, I am sharing this message to illustrate a problem in searching that inhibits and defeats students and scholars alike in searching for topic specific information. In this case it is a simple matter of balance, but in other cases many other heavy duty words will perform the same service of making life in databases and search engines difficult at best. ----------------------------- Here are a few citations that may help you with this subject of research of diabetes and proprioreception followed by some carefully balanced observations about the balance aspect of your topic of research: Kernich, Catherine A. Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine. 59(5):447-9, 1992 Sep-Oct. -------------- The use of balance in searching for diabetics and say standing is little short of a nightmare. Consider these phrases: Energy balance Metabolic balance Balance in relationships (emotional stress) Chemical balance Water balance Fluid balance Thromboxane/prostacyclin balance the balance for drug therapy Balance of coagulation activity Binocular vision and eye muscle balance Balance of treatment Fear of hypoglycemia on the balance of insulin-dependent diabetes Sodium balance "the balance between tissue plasminogen activator and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 in type 2 diabetic patients" ************************************************************************** BLACK HISTORY MONTH - WHY NOT ALL YEAR LONG? http://www.edu-cyberpg.com/culdesac/bhm/bhm.html FIND - folktales, stories of the people, often passed from elders to the next generation, learn through the oral tradition. 2 original Anansi Folktale E-books. Download, read, and hear each story narrated in both American Virgin Island Creole and Standard English, plus find out how these stories survived in tact from the original storyteller. ************************************************************************** Acid-base balance disorder Nitrogen balance Pump-leak balance in diabetic maculopathy Tissue oxygen balance and there is more. Maintaining a proper and upstanding sense of balance in such a mine field of unbalanced use of terminology requires careful balancing of the use of phraseology in the titles that resulted in the balance of the titles found in searching for discussions about balance and diabetes. --------------------------- This is the end of the message that I sent in response to that question. In this case several attempts to locate a body of articles that used balance in the sense wanted was futile. Consequently, a seperate search was run for sense of standing and for proprioception both in the context of diabetes. Then, the much longer list of documents that combined diabetes with balance was scanned for context relevant resources. Words with multiple meanings and words used within a context in a variety of ways can make finding the information about that term in the specific context desired quite a difficult and time consuming task. Computers do not always do all of the work for us, and this is a good example of one of those times.
