Subject: [WWWEDU] Thirteen Ed Online Bulletin - April 2003

Thirteen Ed Online is Thirteen/WNET New York's FREE award-winning online
service for K-12 educators, parents, and students. This monthly bulletin
highlights Thirteen's newest programming and resources, with links to K-12
resources on Thirteen Ed Online and on the Web.

Happy Spring! This month's Ed Online theme is "Financial Literacy" -- just
in time for tax season. Our theme was inspired by the educational
programming of CYBERCHASE and TV411, where students learn the basics of
earning, saving and spending. Tune in to the financially fulfilling
programming on Thirteen, and then bring it to the classroom with lesson
plans online at www.thirteen.org. This month's financial literacy theme is
made possible through the generous support of the Citigroup Foundation.

IN THIS BULLETIN:
1-Theme-related online educational materials and lesson plans
2-STUDENTS' TAKE - a student-made Web site
3-Thirteen's theme-related programming and resources
4-More Thirteen on-air, online, and print resources
5-News and Events in the Thirteen Broadcast Area

1-THEME-RELATED ONLINE EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS AND LESSON PLANS

To access this month's new and featured lesson plans, go to
www.thirteen.org, select Ed Online, then the title of the lesson plan.
Also, the "For Teachers" sections of CYBERCHASE and TV411 have plenty of
extra resources to support teachers in financial literacy instruction.

Lesson One:
Cyber Currency
Grades 4-6

This set of lessons uses games, easy explanations, and the "Trading
Places" episode of the popular animated series CYBERCHASE to teach kids
about financial literacy. Kids learn the value of currency, how to save
and how to earn interest. In a key lesson, kids even get to purchase items
in their classroom's general store.

Lesson Two:
Filling Empty Pockets
Grades 9-12

Explore the concepts of borrowing and credit in this lesson. Students
learn how credit works and how to avoid "credit trouble." They also
consider the real cost of buying on credit. Finally, students weigh
various real credit offers to decide which offer is the best. It's a fun
way to learn the importance of financial literacy!

2-STUDENTS' TAKE - A STUDENT MADE WEB SITE

"Learning More through Financial Literacy"
Kids offer a student's-eye view on financial literacy in this Web site.
Young folk from the Phipps After-School program explore the different ways
boys and girls budget their allowances and create a vision for a future
investment. Click to it by going to www.thirteen.org, then linking to Ed
Online and then to "Learning More through Financial Literacy." Check it
out!

3-THIRTEEN'S THEME-RELATED PROGRAMMING AND RESOURCES

CYBERCHASE EPISODE: TRADING PLACES AIRS APRIL 17 AT 5PM ON THIRTEEN
In this fun intro to financial literacy, the kids and Digit crash land on
cybersite Nowhere, along with Hacker, Buzz and Delete. As a result of the
crash, Hacker is shrunk, and Buzz and Delete become smart. In a race to
rebuild their cybercraft and save Marbles, Digit and the kids learn to
trade and barter and eventually create a monetary system. But who will
finish first?

Major funding for Cyberchase is provided by The National Science
Foundation, PBS and The Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

TV411: EPISODE 110 AIRS APRIL 14 AT 1PM ON THIRTEEN
In this episode, a young couple visits a credit counselor to learn how to
manage their money. Also, "America's Smartest Moves," hosted by America's
Funniest Videos star John Fugelsang looks at the fine print on those heady
credit card offers. A commercial parody "Rip Off" looks critically at a
television offer, and "Book Club" puts the spotlight on Studs Terkel who
reads from his book WORKING. It's all about getting paid.

CYBERCHASE AT-HOME PACKETS AND HOME VIDEOS
CYBERCHASE has new materials available that can help bring the hit series
into the classroom. Starting this month, episodes will be available on VHS
through www.shopPBS.com/teachers and through 1-800-344-3337. CYBERCHASE
will also publish funky folders of learning activities for kids - in
English and Spanish! To request them, send your street address via email
to guiderequest@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

6-EDUCATION TECHNOLOGY NEWS

The "Digital Divide" - that chasm that separates tech-haves from the
tech-have-nots - seems to be closing up. Recent studies suggest that
access for low-income children has grown by about 60% in the past two
years. But these kids mostly find access in their schools' computer labs.
Is there still a problem? Find out more at
http://www.edweek.org/ew/newstory.cfm?slug=28internet.h22 and
http://www.eschoolnews.com/news/showStory.cfm?ArticleID=4309.

7-NEXT MONTH'S THEME

Next month we'll be featuring lesson plans and educational support for a
fascinating new documentary, BERGA: SOLDIERS OF ANOTHER WAR. It tells the
story of a little known WWII concentration camp where Jewish-American
POW's worked and died. It's the last and most personal documentary made by
filmmaker Charles Guggenheim - and it's airing on Thirteen in May.
