HOTLINE FOR PARENTS
How sweetly simple. Provide parents help in the language they speak. The
Ayuda (help) Hotline is a big hit in Mesa, Ariz., where nearly 30 percent of
the student population is Latino and most have parents who are not confident
in English. The Ayuda line, for parents in the district, is open from 7:30
a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and receives from 50 to 100 calls a week. Parents ask
questions ranging from information on immunization to questions about adult
English-as-a-second-language courses.The hotline is administered by the
district's English Language Acquisition Department, which also oversees other
programs for English-learners and their parents. Mesa is one of the first
districts in the state to start a bilingual hotline. Information about Ayuda
was broadcast on the district's Spanish cable TV show, Temas Educativos, and
advertised in school newsletters."This is very rewarding work," said Ayuda
operator Delma Alvarez-Smith. "Parents call me back all the time to thank me
for assisting them. They're always so grateful."
