This is for science and biology teachers, roughly
from Grade 4 through high school, with some
application to middle-grade Math (data analysis).
It's the second of our two-part series on websites
about the ocean.

Race Rocks classroom activities were designed to
link last year's Jason project, From Shore To Sea,
with the B.C. K-12 science curriculum.

The result is a set of lesson plans that use the
Web to take groups on virtual field trips around
the Marine Protected Area at Race Rocks. That's a
set of islets a few miles from my Victoria office;
they're a particularly rich marine ecosystem, but
due to protected status and remoteness they're
beyond the reach of school field trips.

The basic activity model is Webquest. As lesson
plans go, these are pretty sophisticated. Assessment
is rubric-based and employs student input to set
criteria. Students collect their data from video:
Race Rocks tidal heights are measured by applying a
ruler to the screen; animal behaviour is plotted
after observing the actual behaviour. Fortunately,
computer access is not required for the full time-on-task.

Rubrics and teacher guides are downloadable, but
students usually prepare their own worksheets and
data tables from patterns. Linkages to the B.C.
curriculum outcomes are provided, with (I think)
sufficient detail for teachers in other regions to
make their own curricular fit.

Most lessons employ RealVideo as the touring and
data-gathering medium. They'll work on a 56K modem
connection, but faster access is recommended.

The lessons and videos were funded by the B.C.
Ministry of Education. There is no advertising;
registration is not required.

Speaking of Jason projects... the JASON Foundation for
Education has not been in Nuggets for some years but
deserves mention for the more ambitious science teachers.
The foundation's motto is "Real Science. Real Time. Real
Learning." Next year they're taking classrooms to the
rain forests in Panama, for a virtual tour of current
research and ecosystem management there. For details see
