In Al's Morning edition found on the Poynter.org website, there is an
interesting segment regarding the funding of the No Child Left Behind
(NCLB) program that is mandated by Federal legislation.

Federal Education Mandates

"One always hears about 'belt tightening' or 'cutting fat' from budgets.
School districts are now cutting muscle. Schools all over America are
facing the double whammy of bad economy and huge fiscal demands of the
federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) program. In fact, some states are
projecting they will have to spend $5 to $7 for every $1 they will receive
from the federal government to pay for the NCLB mandates."

(See this collection of research):

NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND
Costs and Benefits
The promise of providing all children with a high-quality education is a
noble one. But after looking at the projected costs for 10 states to
fulfill the requirements of NCLB, Mr. Mathis fears that the federal
government is asking too much and giving too little.

Indeed, funding of NCLB aside, there is much discussion of planned large
scale reductions to the ERIC Database, the Clearinghouses that serve
research work and workers in various subfields of education, and of the
services provided to educators and the public by the ERIC system.

Bonnie Bracey has just posted a reminder to the K12Admin discussion group
of the valuable ERIC services that are in danger of being lost in a
message that may now be found in the public archives of that discussion
group:

Another powerful statement about the loss of valuable resources and
services for those in education or needing to learn about education
sources and issues may be found in the GOVDOC-L archives which are also
open to the public:

This message describes some of the powerful tools and resources made
available in the ERIC database and information network:

May 9 is the last day for comments about the proposed changes to ERIC.
