Project Description
"The Peer Review Project is designed to support faculty in the
development of a community of scholars who write about the intellectual
work involved in their teaching and who share that writing with
interested colleagues. Faculty at five research universities are
participating in the program. A faculty member's experience begins with a
year long fellowship that supports the writing of short essays on
different aspects of teaching (intellectual content, teaching practices,
and student understanding). Faculty then combine the essays into a
reflective document (referred to as a course portfolio) in the form of an
inquiry into the success of a course in helping students learn. These
portfolios are exchanged and discussed in an annual seminar on each
campus for fellowship participants; general issues and readings on
teaching are also part of the seminar. After local conversation and
subsequent refinement, the portfolios will be made available to faculty
on other campuses participating, and private comments will be exchanged.
Some portfolio authors will make further revisions in their portfolios
and in their courses, and the evolving portfolios will be an iterative
record of teachers' inquiry into those experiences that produce the most
student understanding. The project goal is to help faculty become skilled
as writers and readers of course portfolios, making these portfolios
useful both to those who produce them and those whose teaching can
benefit from reading them."
Partner Institutions
The five institutions in this project (University of Nebraska, Indiana
University, Kansas State University, the University of Michigan, and Texas
A&M University) are Ph.D.-granting research universities. Faculty on each
campus have multiple missions including teaching, research, and outreach.
The intellectual work done in research is already well represented in the
publications and funded projects of the faculty, and there is a desire to
represent the intellectual work in teaching as well. All five institutions
are committed to finding a way for faculty to learn from each other's
excellent teaching, just as faculty learn from each other's publicly
accessible research.
