Subject: [NASA Quest Discuss] S3 Program

Hello Everyone,

There's an update about the Student Signatures in Space (S3) Program.
Despite the tragic events of February 1, we are proceeding with the S3
program. Space Day is still planned to be celebrated on the first Thursday
in May (although it will probably be much less celebratory and more
introspective than other years). And since S3 is part of Space Day, we're
going to collect signatures as planned.

The only major difference from years past is that we will not be able to
predict which mission these signatures will be flown on. Depending on how
long it takes to return to flight, the signatures may not even make it up
in 2003. It's much too early to make any kind of guesses on that. However,
even if we don't fly the signatures in 2003, we do plan to fly the
signatures on a mission later determined by NASA once they have resumed
flying, so the schools will eventually get their signatures flown and their
posters back for display.

We received many inquiries asking if the signatures ever flew on Space
Shuttle Columbia. The answer to that is no. In the six years NASA and
Lockheed Martin have been holding Space Day, the signatures have flown on
every orbiter except Columbia.
