Subject: Listen to Whales -- Network Nuggets

[ The Network nuggets office overlooks a
[ lovely small seaport. So this week, we'll
[ have a pair of nuggets for teaching about
  [ the marine environment.

  ***  [[[  LISTEN TO WHALES   ]]]   ***

http://whalesong.net

This is for any teacher with marine mammals
in his or her teaching during the winter.

The humpback whales have returned to their
southern calving grounds in shallow waters off
Maui. There, a couple of whale enthusiasts
lowered an underwater microphone to the
vicinity of the whales, and connected it to
the Internet. Go to the "Whalesong" website
to listen in.

After an opening advertisement, there's
little but wave sounds and whale sounds, so
you can just leave it on for background while
you teach about whales. Some Morse code
station ID (a teaching moment itself) runs
every ten minutes.

The humpbacks will be singing from December
until mid-April or so. Best listening time
(in North America) is the morning. If there
are no live whales when you tune in, the site
has prerecorded whalesong.

Whalesong.Net is run on a shoestring budget,
and recently got organized as a charitable
foundation. There is modest advertising. If
you use Whalesong, a donation is suggested.
