The National Endowment of Humanities and the Division of
Bicultural Bilingual Studies at the University of Texas at San Antonio
institute will be held June 22 ñJuly 18, 2003 in San Antonio, Texas. The
UTSA/NEH Derrumbando Fronteras/Breaking Boundaries institute is designed to
provide secondary school teachers with a historical and cultural framework
that will enable them to integrate the teaching of Latino/a literatures into
 their American literature curriculum.
The intensive four-week program is designed to help teachers
from across the nation revamp curricula with an exploration of Mexican
American and Latino literatures using a combination of traditional classroom
exchanges and high-tech tools. Participants have the opportunity to listen
and interact with many visiting scholars such as Drs. Tomas Ybarra y
Frausto, Alicia Gaspar de Alba, Tey Diana Rebolledo, and more than a dozen
creative writers, including the internationally acclaimed Sandra Cisneros,
Virgil Suarez, Cristina Garcia, and Helena Maria Viramontes.
The project is headed by Project Director Dr. Ellen Riojas
Clark, Associate Professor in the Division of Bicultural Bilingual Studies.
Dr. Louis Mendoza, Associate Professor and Dr. Ben Olguin, Assistant
Professor in the Department English, Classics and Philosophy serve as the
