Accountability Plans Approved

      Delaware, Kansas, Maryland, & West Virginia have completed
      work on plans for strong state accountability systems aligned
      with the No Child Left Behind Act.  Ten states have gained
      approval for their plans.  These plans are posted (as they

Reading First Grants

      Kansas & Nevada will receive $6.4 million & $4 million for the
      first year of multi-year grants to help schools & districts
      improve children's reading achievement using scientifically
      proven methods of instruction.

Fourth-Grade Reading Literacy in 35 Countries

      An international study of reading literacy found that U.S.
      fourth-graders outperform their counterparts in 23 of the 34
      other participating countries but that there are significant
      gaps between racial/ethnic groups, between students in high
      poverty schools & other public schools, & between girls &
      boys.

Highly Qualified Teachers: April 15 TV Show

      "Investing in America's Classrooms: Ensuring Every Child Has a
      Highly Qualified Teacher" is the title of the next ED TV show,

Rural Caucus & Task Force

      Secretary Paige joined Senator Mike Enzi, Representative Denny

Guidance for Helping Homeless Students
