  ***  [[[  DNA 50TH ANNIVERSARY  ]]]  ***

This is for Biology teachers, the first of a few
planned Nuggets on DNA and its discovery.

This coming April 25th is the 50th anniversary of
Watson and Crick's historic paper in the journal
Nature, in which they reported and gave the first
diagram for the double-helix structure of DNA.

There will be a number of celebrations of this
discovery in coming months, many of them featuring
James Watson himself, and at least one coinciding
with the final unveiling of the full human genome.
In the US, April 25th will be designated "National
DNA Day."

For an early start on the 50th Anniversary event,
go to San Francisco's Exploratorium site for an
annotated version of the original 1953 paper. As
full-blown scientific papers go, it's quite short
and clear. Exploratorium and Cold Spring Harbor
staff have added commentary to explain the politics
and sexism of the time, and the scientific race to
be the first with a plausible DNA structure.

Over the years, Nuggets has featured Exploratorium
more than any other museum website. "Online since
1993, the Exploratorium was one of the first
science museums to build a site on the World Wide
Web. Our site now contains over 12,000 Web pages
exploring hundreds of different topics."
