I ran across what looks to be a useful web site for creating online
discussions. The site is QuickTopic (http://www.quicktopic.com). This
could be used as a way to get information from parents, students, or
other educators on various topics.

To test how well this works, I started a discussion forum for the topic
"Classroom Blogs". To join in (or just to read) use your web browser to
go to:
http://www.quicktopic.com/21/H/wGR2wyFVw7sNp

You don't have to register or sign in, and you can choose to receive
email for newly posted messages -- just click the Subscribe button when
you get there.

QuickTopic is a free, extremely easy discussion space. You can start
your own topic or document review in about 20 seconds by visiting:
http://www.quicktopic.com/

This is the discussion topic.

Web logs, or Blogs, are online journals. Many are personal journals,
but there are others that are of interest to a wide audience. Think of
the interest there would have been if Louis & Clark's journals had been
available to the general public on a daily basis! Recently there have
been "war blogs" by soldiers that were widely publicized.

What are your thoughts on a classroom blog, something that parents and
relatives can read to find out what is happening in the classroom. Who
does the posting? What do they write about? How often? How do you
handle names (first only, initials only, etc.)?

Check out SchoolBlogs http://www.schoolblogs.com/

for more information on blogs.

RESEARCH AND EVALUATION
Research done by US military schools has shown the #1 difference
in children's scholastic success depends on parental involvement.
You can model their success by simply inviting your parents into
your school and ask them to be active in the classroom.
