Teaching Social Psychology Newsletter

Vol. 10, No. 10

.

June 30, 2011
the e-mail newsletter accompanying the
Resources for the Teaching of Social Psychology website at

.

.

I mentioned in the last issue that I would share subscriber Eric Hansen's (whose name I misspelled last time; sorry, Eric) and my experience with our students collaborating on a small, social psychology project. His students are in Sweden, mine in the U.S. Unfortunately, our terms did not overlap very well, so the project was more limited than initially conceived. But we gained valuable experience in trying such an international project. We decided to use Facebook as our medium for collaboration and communication. That part worked out quite well. Not surprisingly, our students were quite familiar and facile with Facebook. (Wow. I'm usually never able to create good alliteration. :-) I set up a separate group on Facebook that was private to just our two classes; only class members could read each others' comments and ideas. For the first part of the project, we assigned each student in both classes two of Cialdini's six principles. Each student was required to post an example from their own country of each, with at least one of the examples to include a link to something online such as a video example. We created "docs" in the group for each principle. Students posted their examples under the respective doc. That way we could keep them more organized and easy to find. Students and faculty were then able and did comment upon each others' examples, sharing some cross-cultural knowledge in the process. The second part of the project was more collaborative. One student in Eric's class was assigned to a group with either two, three, or four of my students. My class was larger. Each group then either selected a "problem" (e.g., how to reduce texting while driving) from a few we gave them or selected their own problem. Each group then posted a brief solution to the problem using Cialdini's principles. Although the project was given on short notice with little time to complete it, and at the very end of my term, I believe the students did an excellent job with both parts.

.

What did I learn from this experience? First, I was very pleased to learn that Eric was a great colleague to work with. He had good ideas, good energy, was flexible, and just a very pleasant person to work with. Second, we learned that Facebook worked very well as a medium for this type of collaboration. Students were very familiar and facile(!) with it. Virtually no training necessary. At least for them! Facebook worked as a good tool for both communication and collaboration. I can see a lot of potential for it on both those fronts. Third, I was pleased to find that the students were very flexible and willing to work with us as we tried to figure out how to make this work. I would definitely do something like this again. In fact, if any of you are teaching social psychology in the spring of 2012 and are interested in some type of collaborative project for our students drop me a line. Or, if you would like to try some type of collaborative project with somebody on this list, and you either can't do it next spring or just don't want to work with me, let me know and we can match up some others on this list. Lots of good potential there. If you have any more questions about our project drop me a line.

.

On another front, a subscriber asked if I could provide some resources on teaching social psychology online, or create a section on the Resources site about it. I will look for such resources. If you have any ideas, resources, suggestions for such resources or for creating such a section on the website, please pass them along. Are there others out there who like such stuff?

.

Just a reminder: There will be no July issue. See you again in August!

"Activists in Kentucky are planning a peaceful response after two gay men with developmental and intellectual disabilities were kicked out of a public pool. A maintenance technician reportedly cited the Bible while telling the two men they couldn't swim at The Pavilion, a government-funded recreational facility in Hazard, Kentucky. "We own this place and can tell you to leave if we want to," the couple was told, according to the Kentucky Equality Foundation. "The Pavilion staff immediately entered the pool area and asked my clients and their staff to leave the Pavilion," Mending Hearts Executive Director Shirlyn Perkins recalled. "My staff asked The Pavilion staff why they were being asked to leave, and they were informed that 'gay people' weren't allowed to swim there."

This blog entry describes recent research suggesting that priming through "pictures of attractive women or women's legs had a raft of war-relevant effects on heterosexual male participants, including: biasing their judgments to be more bellicose towards hostile countries; speeding their ability to locate an armed soldier on a computer screen; and speeding their ability to recognise and locate war-related words on a computer screen. Equivalent effects after looking at pictures of attractive men were not found for female participants."

Okay, perhaps this school isn't trying to eliminate gender roles, but it is trying to reduce the presence of specific gender roles for boys and girls in the school by avoiding "using words like 'him' or 'her' and address the 33 kids as 'friends' rather than girls and boys. From the color and placement of toys to the choice of books, every detail has been carefully planned to make sure the children don't fall into gender stereotypes." But they can act like penguins as much as they like! My kind of school.

"For years, Bryon Widner thrived on hate as a violent skinhead - a razor-carrying "enforcer" who helped organize other racist gangs around the country. His hate was literally etched on his face in the form of tattoos with racist and violent themes. But with the help of the Southern Poverty Law Center - the nation's leading monitor of hate and extremist activity - Widner left the white power movement and endured nearly two years of excruciating laser treatments to remove the tell-tale tattoos so that he could start a new life with his wife and children. On Sunday night, his story will be told in "Erasing Hate," which airs at 9 p.m. EDT on MSNBC. The one-hour documentary recounts Widner's life within the white power movement, the decision that led him and his wife to leave it, and the procedures he received."
