Could Christie have handled this better? If you were his P.R. adviser, what would you have told him to say or do? What would you tell him to do now?

Jeffrey Ainis, Playbook reader in Alhambra, Calif.

.

Governor Christie should have immediately said that he did not know what was behind the lane closures (if he didn't), but that whether they were proper or not, he will accept full responsibility for them, since they happened in the government he administers. He should have said that he takes the issue seriously, but that it would set an improper tone to assume wrongdoing by any worker. Nevertheless, something that disrupts the lives of so many citizens, businesses, and municipalities should have been announced to those it affects and that impact should have been brought to his attention. He should have said that citizens deserve to have the unusual-sounding move investigated thoroughly and he will report back with the full details, no matter what he finds.

.

At this point, he should say that, while an investigation is still going on (and hopefully it is), he needs to look at the fact that some of his constituents, and possibly some of the people in his own government, see retribution and bullying flowing from the tone he has set at the top. He should say that while he enjoys telling things straight, he needs to make sure that those who work for him know that service, respect for citizens and each other, and respect for the law, are the primary values they are called on to represent in their jobs. He should say that people do a better job when they work in a cordial environment and come to it with an attitude of "what more can I do to help?"-an attitude of service. He should also say that this issue has made him realize that he needs to be sure he is inspiring those values of service, cordiality and respect by his own actions and demeanor; that while he plans to remain true to his own personality and nature, some self-reflection may be in order. He should say that he is committed to being someone who uplifts the society and those around him, and that is why he is in this job. And he should mean it.
