WASHINGTON A late-night measure that prevented a federal government shutdown also ended any chance for New Jersey to use $271 million that Gov. Chris Christie rejected for the Trans-Hudson rail tunnel on some other transportation project in the Garden State.

.

The bill, which passed Congress early Saturday morning, keeps the government open for six days and gives lawmakers time to debate a larger measure aimed at cutting almost $40 billion from this years budget and keeping the government operating until Oct. 1.

.

The six-day continuing resolution trims $2 billion from current spending a chunk of it from mass transit projects such as the $271 million that was to be spent to begin building a second set of commuter rail tunnels under the Hudson River, linking New Jersey and Manhattan.

.

Christie earlier this year scrapped that project, estimated to cost at least $9 billion, saying New Jersey cant afford to pay the billions of dollars in inevitable cost overruns. That sparked criticism from those who contend a new tunnel system is vital to reduce congestion on the Northeast Corridor and boost the regions economy.

.

Some New Jersey lawmakers hoped to transfer the funds Christie rejected to some other project in the state. But the short-term continuing resolution ended that possibility by yanking the rail tunnel money and millions more from transit programs nationwide, lawmakers said.
