. Ted Stevens, Longest-Serving GOP Senator Ex-Lawmaker in Alaska Plane Crash; Held Seat for 40 Years Before Corruption Charges Toppled Career Aug. 10, 2010 Associated PressCBS News <http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/08/10/national/main6760221.shtml>
(CBS/ AP) There were conflicting reports on whether Ted Stevens, the longest-serving Republican senator in U.S. history who lost his seat after a corruption conviction that was later dismissed, was killed Tuesday in a small plane crash in Alaska. He was 86.
A family friend said Stevens was among five people killed in the crash in southwest Alaska. The same friend said later the death had not been confirmed.
In 1978, Stevens survived a Learjet crash in Anchorage that killed five people, including his first wife.
Over the years, Stevens became a political legend in Alaska. Affectionately nicknamed "Uncle Ted," he was named "Alaskan of the Century" in 2000 by the state legislature and the airport in Anchorage bears his name. Thanks to Stevens' long tenure and clout on Capitol Hill, Alaska earned substantial influence in national politics well beyond its small population.
However, Stevens was also known for his fiery temper, the career-ending corruption trial and championing the infamous "Bridge to Nowhere," a $400 million pork transportation project designed to link two remote islands.
Rescuers arrive to help Alaska plane crash victims By BECKY BOHRER Associated Press Writer 2010 The Associated Press Aug. 10, 2010, 12:23PM Houston Chronicle <http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/top/all/7147258.html>JUNEAU, Alaska A plane carrying nine people crashed amid southwest Alaska's remote mountains and lakes, killing five people on board, authorities said Tuesday. Former Sen. Ted Stevens and ex-NASA chief Sean O'Keefe were believed to be aboard.
It was unclear if the longtime Republican senator and O'Keefe were among the dead.
Rescuers arrived on helicopter early Tuesday and were giving medical care to survivors, Alaska National Guard spokesman Maj. Guy Hayes said. He offered no additional details, except that there were potential fatalities.
Alaska officials reported that nine people were aboard the aircraft and that "it appears that there are five fatalities," NTSB spokesman Ted Lopatkiewicz told The Associated Press in Washington.
A U.S. government official told the AP that Alaska authorities have been told that the 86-year-old Stevens, a former longtime Republican senator, was on the plane. The official, who spoke on grounds of anonymity, says Stevens' condition is unknown.
The federal official declined to be publicly identified because the crash response and investigation are under way.

<snip> Alaska has had long love affair with Ted StevensBy Jim Kavanagh CNN
August 10, 2010 1:28 p.m. EDT <http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/08/10/stevens.bio/>(CNN) -- Aviation has given and aviation has taken away throughout Ted Stevens' adult life.
The former U.S. senator, who was reported to be aboard a plane that crashed Monday night near Dillingham, Alaska, was a decorated Army Air Corps pilot during World War II, and the international airport in Anchorage, Alaska, was renamed in his honor in 2000.
Stevens survived the crash of a Learjet at that airport in 1978, but his first wife, Ann, and four other people perished. He remarried in 1980.
Often re-elected to the Senate by margins approaching 80 percent, Stevens served 40 years and 10 days and was the longest-serving Republican senator in U.S. history. (Sen. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina was a Democrat for part of his 47-year tenure.)
Stevens earned the nickname "Uncle Ted" and a reputation as one of the most effective of all pork-barrel lawmakers, a senator who funneled billions of federal dollars to his home state.
Stevens' Senate career ended in 2008 when he lost his bid for re-election, done in by a conviction in federal court days before the election. A federal judge set aside the conviction the following April, citing prosecutorial misconduct.
Stevens was convicted of seven counts of making false statements on Senate financial disclosure forms. The jury found Stevens failed to report about $250,000 in gifts and renovations to his house in Alaska between 1999 and 2006, paid for by the head of a large oil-services company.
However, the Justice Department later acknowledged that Stevens' attorneys were not given access to notes from an interview with the government's key witness against Stevens. The notes show that responses given by the witness, oil industry executive Bill Allen, were inconsistent with testimony he made in court.
<snip>Despite the legal victory, Stevens was 85 years old and his seemingly unstoppable political career was over.
